Stand up for Voter Freedom in Texas!

Texas election law is currently among the most undemocratic and restrictive in the country, prohibiting people from their democratic right to vote for alternatives to the Democratic and Republican parties.  However, there is a bill in the Texas legislature now that would change all that, should it pass, and we need your help to get it across the finish line.

HB-2504 is a bill to lower the retention threshold from 5% to 2% to stay on the ballot. On Friday, May 10, it passed out of the House and is now scheduled for a hearing in the Senate State Affairs Committee on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 9 am. There are only a few days left before the Texas legislature goes to recess until 2021!

Because HB-2504 would grant retroactive party ballot status to any party that has achieved at least 2% in the last statewide vote, this would mean that the Green Party of Texas would automatically become a recognized political party in Texas, thanks to the great work of Martina Salinas’ campaign for Railroad Commission in 2016 (thank you, Martina!)

We need you to act now to get your state senator to vote YES, either in committee or when it reaches the Senate floor.  Independent voters have a right to get their own candidates on the ballot, because more choices make for better democracy.

What you can do:

  • Call the members of the Senate State Affairs Committee and urge them to vote yes.  Leave your message with the committee clerk at (512) 463-0380.
  • Call your state senator and ask them to vote YES when HB-2504 reaches the Senate floor.  Explain that you are a Texas voter and want more democracy via more choices.  Click here to find out your senator’s contact info.
  • Sign the petition on this page, and we will email all members of the State Affairs Committee on your behalf.

Thank you for standing up to defend voter freedom in Texas!
