Howie Hawkins and Green Party achieve electoral vote path to victory
(Syracuse, NY, April 25, 2020) Recent ballot access wins for the Green Party, with participation from the Hawkins campaign, have now put Greens on the ballot in enough states to achieve 270 electoral votes and therefore, the presidency of the United States.
The Illinois Green Party has been granted relief from ballot access petitioning requirements and placed on the ballot for the 2020 General Election for the offices of President and Vice President, US Senate, and other down ticket races in which Green candidates were on the ballot in 2016 or 2018.
The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois ordered minor parties previously on the 2016 or 2018 ballots for an office up in 2020 are automatically granted ballot access for those same offices. The ruling further stated that candidates for offices in which there was no minor party candidate must obtain only 10% of the original petition requirement, with an extended deadline.
The Hawkins campaign is devoting resources to helping the Green Party get ballot access in all 50 states and D.C., but had to suspend petitioning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Illinois decision sets a precedent that will help us make the case in other states to put the Green Party back on the ballot because we’ve been on the ballot for many election cycles. To keep the Green Party off state ballots would be to let the coronavirus kill fair elections and democracy,” said Howie Hawkins, who is leading in the primaries for the Green Party presidential nomination.
Earlier this month, the State of Vermont waived all petition requirements, a strongly praised decision to protect public health. This came months after the State of Texas passed fair ballot access standards for the state’s existing minor parties.
The Green nominee for president will have ballot access in at least 24 states including D.C., totaling 305 Electoral College votes, surpassing the 270 needed to win the presidency. The Hawkins campaign has assembled a team of lawyers to help state Green Parties appeal to state governments for ballot access in the unique circumstances of coronavirus stay-at-home and social distancing measures.

This is good news ; ballot access is essential since the Presidency is decided often in the Electoral College rather than by popular vote.
Good work and good luck!
All the progressive 3rd parties should unite under the green party so there is only one 3rd party choice.
