The Green Party came into existence in 1985 and has claimed electoral victories at the municipal, county and state levels. Since 1996, the Green Party has contested six US presidential elections. In the 2016 elections, the party received over a million votes.

In the 2000 presidential elections, the party gained widespread attention when it polled over 2.7% of the popular vote.

The current Green Party is known as the Green Party of the United States (GPUS) and it is a federation of Green state political parties in the US.

The party promotes green politics, such as environmentalism; nonviolence; social justice; participatory, grassroots democracy; gender equality; LGBTQ rights; anti-war; anti-racism and ecosocialism. The party is seen as left-wing.

In the US, the party has a strong support base in Pacific Coast, Upper Great Lakes and Northeast.

Trade unionist and environmental activist Howie Hawkins is party’s presidential nominee in the 2020 presidential elections. He is also one of the founders of the party.
