“A really stimulating conversation with Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins. He’s the original author of the Green New Deal, and we talk about whether current proposals are enough to solve the climate crisis, what issues you’ll care about five years from now, and the future of the American left.”
Not Safe For Wonks Podast
Many of us who have “come up” through scientific paths and careers recognize that climate change is only part of the picture, a misnomer, and based on several distortions started by the Al Gore team twenty years ago. In one sense, climate is the least of our Gaia worries; in another sense, through which it touches on petrochemicals, it is a concept worth saving. It is a misnomer, created to dodge “global warming”, in that climate change has been happening constantly far longer than people have existed. Far more urgent than methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are actions to stop the Anthropocene Extinction: We must get plastic out of our water and everywhere else. The oceans must be cleaned up, remediating dead zones. We must create large networks of migratory habitat. We must stop the disasters of military dumping and agribusiness chemicals. We must reconstruct our soils, ending “chemical” fertilizer, rebuild our forests (which is showing progress) and protect our rainforests. We can minimize mining of all sorts by a vastly more serious effort at recycling. In short, people must put Gaia first, because that is the biological and geological network by which we all not only interconnect, but survive. E O Wilson in 1980 had far more to say than Al Gore in 2000, and we must refocus. We are forty years into our extinction with a million species estimated lost so far. No joke! Please, please, step OUT of the politics of “climate science” and see the big picture. Just as a final “last straw”, the statistics of measuring temperature make the idea of “global warming” extremely dubious, especially in the midst of the Eddy Grand Solar Minimum, which we are also feeling the last couple years. We have let the politicians, including the IPCC, get this whole issue hashed up.
